Lebron James is arguably the greatest basketball player in the world. Even his detractors agree he is at the very least a top three player in the NBA. LeBron has multiple MVPs and is currently fighting to win his second consecutive NBA title. Yet, somehow he never got to see his face on the cover of a basketball video game. His peers such as Derrick Rose, Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook have, but King James has been a no-show. That is until now.
LeBron has just been unveiled as the cover athlete for NBA 2K14. The Miami Heat star made the announcement in a short trailer for the title on the eve of the first game of the NBA Finals. While LeBron lost that game, he at least got a consolation prize by being on the cover.
"My friends, family, and fans all know how much I love NBA 2K. I remember, as a kid, getting so excited for the game to come out and see who was on the cover and it's amazing to be a part of this great tradition," James said in a statement sent to NBA.com.
"I love partnerships and opportunities that connect me directly with fans. I know from my own experience and now watching my own kids, NBA 2K is among the coolest and purest ways for fans to connect to the NBA. I love being a part of it."
NBA 2K14 is expected to be released on Oct. 1. Among current generation systems, the game will be available for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. 2K Sports Senior VP of Basketball Operations Jason Argent told IGN that the game will not be developed for the Wii U this year.
Argent said 2K Sports decided it was better to focus resources on next generation consoles instead of Nintendo's console. He told IGN that NBA 2K14 will be available on next generation consoles at launch.
Pre-orders of the title are currently available for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. Fans who pre-order the game will get the King James Bonus Pack. The special offer features 10,000 virtual currency points, extra content for the new Path to Greatness Mode, the ability to play as James in Blacktop Mode and a special signature move called King James.
