PlayStation VR Review: When Combined With PS4 Pro, Sony’s PlayStation VR Is Incredibly Impressive

Besides being named by Time Magazine as one of 2016’s 25 Best Inventions, Sony’s Playstation VR is also on Amazon’s list of 5 Top-Rated VR Headsets. The device also impressed tech websites that reviewed PlayStation VR.

TechAdvisor writer Lewis Painter, in a review of Playstation VR, found the gaming gadget immersive, comfortable and incredibly impressive when combined with the PS4 Pro. He gave the PlayStation VR four stars out of five overall rating.

Four Stars Rating

PlayStation VR got also four stars for Build Quality, Features and Performance and a higher four-and-a-half stars for Value for Money. Painter noted that the headset provides a great VR experience even without a high-end PC as well as its being compatible with any of the 44 million PS4s around the world.

Priced at $399 in Amazon, it is more affordable than Oculus Rift at $599.99 and HTC VIVE Virtual Reality System at $799.99. The dedicated VR headset for the Sony PlayStation features an advanced 5.7-inch OLED 1080p VR display which delivers seamless visuals at up to 120 frames per second, according to Black Friday Magazine.

Price Points of VRs

In contrast, the magazine said the Oculus Rift is for “serious gamers who are willing to drop some serious money” while the HTC VIVE is expensive but worth the $799.99 for a real VR enthusiast. For those who just want to have a VR experience but lesser budgets, Samsung Gear VR costs only $53.99 and the Viewmaster VR Starter Pack by Mattel for kids is priced at $16.99.

Painter, who initially thought the PlayStation VR was bulky and heavy, was surprised at how lightweight the headset is. Compared with Oculus Rift, it is not as sexy and sleek, but besides being not heavy, it is comfortable to use since he did not experience any irritation around the headset’s edges upon contact with his skin, especially around the nose area, when used for hours at a time.

He added there is no light leakage since the PlayStation VR headset has several soft rubber flaps around the edges of the HMD which would mould to the shape of the user’s face. It stops the light leaking into the headset without being so close to the face and becomes uncomfortable to the wearer.
