Sony and Microsoft may not walk the same path, but both the companies will do anything to get their next generation consoles – PS4 and Xbox One, respectively – up and running. Now it seems like Microsoft has been influenced by Sony’s transition from PS3 to PS4 and is looking to follow the same procedure with the transition from Xbox 360 to Xbox One.
Microsoft Europe’s VP of Interactive Entertainment Chris Lew, recently in an interview with GameIndustry International, confirms that the company will be looking to support the Xbox 360 for a sometime, even after the Xbox One’s release. By comparison, Microsoft essentially abandoned the original Xbox after the launch of the Xbox 360.
"Xbox 360 will continue for another multiple-year time frame," he says. "We've already got meaningful marketing plans for the next 12 months for Xbox 360 and beyond.”
"Our third-party publishers will bring more content to it, because the installed base is so high.”
Additionally, speaking about the growth of the next-gen consoles in the future, Lewis predicted that the new batch of home hardware will help the overall console market grow by 30 per cent.
"This generation 7 that we're in right now, it's 50 per cent bigger than generation 6 and I think double the size of generation 5. Our anticipation is that generation 8 will be at least 30 per cent bigger still," Lewis adds.
As of now, Microsoft has promised a “huge” Xbox 360-related announcement for E3.
