It was the takedown everyone was waiting for. For his last show of the year, John Oliver, the host for "Last Week Tonight With John Oliver," took the time to rip into president-elect Donald J. Trump, who recently won the 2016 US presidential elections against Democrat Hillary Clinton. The late night host did not mince his words as he tore down the "Klan-backed misogynist" president-elect, and slammed everyone for trying to normalize him so quickly and completely despite everything pointing to the contrary.
What went down
Before "Last Week Tonight With John Oliver's" last episode of the year aired, its official Facebook page had posted that the show would be doing an extended segment on the results of the 2016 US Presidential Elections and what that meant for America. True enough, the episode lived up to the hype as John Oliver reserved his best jokes and insults for the inexperienced Trump, who has been making headlines all week because of his apparent ignorance of what a president does.
John Oliver then delivered a fiery 20-minute attack against Donald Trump. He said the announcement of his victory was one of those sentences "you never thought you would ever hear," adding, "this is not normal. This is f***** up." He also slammed Trump for his flipflopping stances on key issues, likening him to a Magic-8 ball that gives you a different answer every time he's shaken up.
Support for independent journalism
But perhaps one of the most important segments of the show was when John Oliver inadvertently caused a spike in donations for independent journalism. This after the "Last Week Tonight" host said it was fake facts that had caused the stunning ascension of business mogul Donald Trump into the White House, and it was going to take extra vigilance on the words and actions of the president-elect.
