Much like the U.S. Presidential Election results, some of Hollywood's film casting choices have viewers scratching their head and disappointed about the turnout. One film, in particular, is "Ghost in the Shell," the film adaptation of a Japanese manga that places "The Avengers" star Scarlett Johansson right in the middle as the main character called Major Kusanagi. Despite all the whitewashing issues surrounding the film, here's why you should give the film a chance.
The first ever trailer for "Ghost in the Shell" has arrived and despite the backlash on casting a white American actress to play the lead in what clearly should feature an Asian, it's kind of really awesome. Viewers will have to overlook the fact that Johansson seems to keep playing the strong female roles ("The Avengers," "Captain America," "Lucy") and is a Hollywood A-lister, which is why production had to cash in on her name as well. Despite seeing the actress play the same roles over and over again, here's why you should give the film a chance.
While "Ghost in the Shell" is originally a Japanese manga, the film adaptation does honor its roots and tells the story of Major, albeit in a different fashion. Producer Ari Arad, whose credits include "Ghost Rider" and "Iron Man" spoke to Stuff, saying that casting isn't the only piece of the puzzle in the film. There's so much more to see when the film arrives on March 31, 2017, and that's why you should give the film a chance.
Once fans overlook the seemingly whitewashed film, however, "Ghost in the Shell" is actually very aesthetically pleasing. Even Wired agrees, the visuals are indeed stunning and that's one of the things Arad made sure of when making the film. The movie will find Major leading the Section 9 task force to find her true identity. There's also "Game of Thrones"' Pilou Asbaek in the movie, and that's another reason why you should give the film a chance.
"Ghost in the Shell" is directed by Rupert Sanders and is set for a release date of March 31, 2017. Check out the awesome trailer below and let your mind be changed.
