Mother's Day is the perfect time to be appreciative of the woman who gave birth to you. As gaming reaches further and further into more complex themes, it shouldn't be too much of a surprise that the issue of motherhood has been brought up more than a few times in the world of gaming. Here are some of gaming's coolest matriarchal figures.
Crimson Viper - Street Fighter 4
When Capcom's Research & Development were looking to introduce new fighters for Street Fighter 4, they reached out to fans from around the world. Latin America got the Lucha Libre stylings of El Fuerte, France got the amnesiac Sambo fighter in Abel and America got C. Viper. Those who complete single player of arcade mode will realize that she's not only a decked out spy with the latest in high tech weaponry but, a twenty year old single mother of cutesy little Lauren.
Samara - Mass Effect 2
Mass Effect 2's loyalty missions were full of powerfully emotional moments and nothing beat Samara's hunt for her daughter Morinth. Not to mention that the hunt has lasted for centuries. Why is she looking to kill her own daughter? Samara gave birth to three daughters who suffered from a genetic condition that killed their mate during melding. While two of her daughters Falere and Rila chose to live a life of isolation and comfort, Morinth lived reckless. So reckless that she had an entire village worship her and killed a huge number of people. Using Commander Shepard as bait, she's finally able to killer her daughter and put her reign of terror to an end.
The Boss - Metal Gear Solid 3
"Isn't it beautiful? It's almost tragic. When life ends, it gives off a final lingering aroma. Light is but a farewell gift from the darkness to those on their way to die. I've been waiting, Snake, for a long time. Waiting for your birth, your growth, and the finality of today."
Also known as The Joy, Metal Gear Solid 3:Snake Eater's antagonist is not only Revolver Ocelot's mother but mentor and mother figure to Big Boss himself. Her caesarian section during the battlefield birth of Ocelot was so messy that it actually left a scar in the form of a snake across her abdomen. The emotional ending battle against The Boss to Snake Eater ironically turns Big Boss into the series antagonist until Metal Gear Solid.
Eva - Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater & Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
So it turns out that Big Boss' love interest in Snake Eater would be the surrogate mother to his children. Yes, that makes her both the mother of both Liquid and Solid Snake. It's quite sad that Solid Snake doesn't realize that Eva is his mother until her untimely death following an awesome car chase through Eastern Europe.
Yorda's Mother - Ico
The things some women do for beauty. The Queen represents everything a mother shouldn't to their child. The plot if Ico has the titular hero trying to save Yorda from The Queen, who had her so that she could sacrifice her later in order to live longer.
