While it's true that there haven't been a lot of good video game movie adaptations, Ubisoft wants to change that perception by teaming up with a network that knows their stuff: Netflix. With a lot of good TV shows coming out recently, could this be the start of a new era for video games on the screen?
The "Assassin's Creed" and "Far Cry" publisher is gearing up for a potential series on Netflix, reports Reuters. Yves Guillemot, the CEO of Ubisoft, has just been reported to have met with the streaming network, but for now, that's all the information known about it.
Although nothing is confirmed, GameSpot speculates that it's looking to adapt one of its popular game franchises for a series that'll be given the Netflix treatment. A good candidate for such an adaptation would definitely be "Assassin's Creed," especially considering that it has a movie version starring Michael Fassbender coming out this December.
An "Assassin's Creed" series on Netflix would be a great way to build on the setting that the movie will establish. Because the film doesn't exactly follow the games' plot and characters, an episodic series continuing what the film starts would be a good thing to do.
It could also make up for the movie's performance should the latter ever end up being a critical failure, as most video game adaptations tend to be. The movie's performance might also be the big factor in determining what series UbiSoft will produce with Netflix.
Ubisoft already has Ubisoft Motion Pictures, which is in charge of producing TV shows and movies based on its titles. This also wouldn't be the first time Netflix would do a series based on a video game, however. The network has partnered with Activision to produce a series based on "Skylanders" and "Skylanders Academy" through Activision's own TV and movie division, Activision Blizzard Studios.
