"Mafia 3" is the newest game created by Hangar 13 and published by 2K Games. It was released on Oct. 7 and it earned mixed feedback and reactions from gamers and reviewers. The reviews influenced the outcome of how it was received and at first, it seems that the game failed to achieve success.
Then again, almost a month after its launch, Take Two Interactive, parent company of 2K Games, revealed that "Mafia 3" turned out to be the fastest selling game in the history of 2K Game's releases. With this fact, it effectively overtook other 2K Games front line titles like "NBA 2K" and "BioShock."
Take Two Interactive shared that "Mafia 3" set a new record by shipping over 4.5 million copies within the first week from its release date. It should be noted though that the figure is a sell-in which means copies that have been sold to retailers and not directly to players.
But still, this does not change the fact that "Mafia 3" sold millions of copies so it is quite a feat. Take-Two Interactive admitted that the sales result of the game was unexpected but they are grateful with the response.
Now, since the "Mafia 3" is doing so well, it is likely that Hangar 13 will produce more DLCs and updates to improve the game more and continuously provide something new to players. In this way, fans will not get tired of playing the game.
Take Two CEO Strauss Zelnick added that they are also seeing very high interest in the game and not just in terms of sales. He said that "Mafia 3" garnered more than 88 million views on YouTube and this also happened during the first week after the game went live. It only means that people are really interested even if some have not tried the game yet.
Moreover, Washington Post reported that Hangar 13 surprised many people with their "very risky" decision of featuring half-black man protagonist. The publication pointed out, with that kind of setting, the developers may be confronted with issues regarding race since racism is a serious topic these days.
It was concluded that the risk taken by Hangar 13 when they created "Mafia 3" obviously paid off big time. Meanwhile, gamers are waiting for updates and they expect it to be released soon since it is almost a month when the game was published.
