Things seem to not be going well in the land of the DC Extended Universe. After the fans were made excited by the news that "Dope" director Rick Famuyiwa is brought on to helm Warner Bros. and DC's standalone "Flash" movie, it seems that DC fans are going to be let down again with the recent news that Famuyiwa has left the project.
With the the DCEU already in place with 3 films under its belt, the only thing constant in the DCEU is director Zack Snyder. This wouldn't be the first time that news of a director leaving a DC project was heard off. Some time ago, James Wan was said to have departed the "Aquaman" standalone film, but was later revealed to be untrue. For "The Flash" however, it is a sad reality.
Director Rick Famuyiwa is the second director to try his hand at helming the "scarlet speedsters" first solo film outing. Before him, there were talks that the duo of Phil Lord and Chris Miller would be heading the project, but talks were not able to push through. This led to the inclusion of "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" director, Seth Grahame-Smith, but according to The Hollywood Reporter, creative differences caused him to move away from the project. Then enter director Famuyiwa, who is fresh off his critically-acclaimed film, "Dope."
As with the other directors, it would also seem that Famuyiwa's vision for the film was not what Warner Bros. was looking for. With regards to his departure from "The Flash," according to Cinema Blend, he also cited that there are creative differences but opted not to go in detail about it.
However, Famuyiwa recalls how excited he was when he received the news that he has the opportunity to be a part of DC's amazing world of characters. He also said that he was excited to work with Ezra Miller, whom he describes as a phenomenal actor.
Famuyiwa reveals that his original pitch for the film was based on his voice, humor and heart. Also, while he is disappointed that he could not move forward with the DCEU, he remains grateful for the opportunity, and wishes Warner Bros., DC, Jon Berg, Geoff Johns and Ezra Miller all the best.
