On Wednesday, Deadline announced that Johnny Depp will have a main role in J.K. Rowling's 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' installments. Yet unlike other Johnny Depp movie announcements, this was not met with much positive fanfare.
Early this year, news about Johnny Depp's abusive stance toward his wife Amber Heard broke out. This was exacerbated by the photos released showing proof of the alleged abuse.
The court granted Amber Heard a temporary restraining order against Johnny Depp. The court documents states that Heard suffered many instances of violence during the duration of her four-year relationship with the Pirates of the Caribbean star.
In a sworn declaration Heard stated the following, "During the entirety of our relationship, Johnny Depp has been verbally and physically abusive to me," "He has a short fuse. He is often paranoid and his temper is exceptionally scary for me."
Due to these allegations, Harry Potter fans were quick to express their disappointment over Johnny Depp's appointment as one of the leading characters of the Fantastic Beasts.
Amidst the negative feedback, Disney's CEO Bob Iger said that he was not "worried" regarding the actor's "personal problems". Johnny Depp is also set to star in the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie, a highly lucrative franchise for the company. Many are crying foul over this show of profits over accountability attitude of Hollywood companies and that men are easily forgiven for abusive behaviour when the price is right.
Johnny Depp's role in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts movie is still not disclosed but rumor has it that he will be playing as the dark wizard Gellet Grindelwart, the one-time owner of the Elder Wand and Dumbledore's first love.
The film is said to be in the same period when Grindelwald terrorized Europe. One of the film's stars, Ezra Miller, hinted that the character may play a role in the spinoff of Harry Potter.
