The NPD put out its monthly numbers for retail sales Friday, confirming what many susptect. No, the PS4 did not secretly sell one million beta copies. BioShock Infinite simply sold more copies in March on currently-released consoles like the Xbox 360 or PS3 than any other game.
Additionally, according to GameStop's report of the report, overall industry retail sales slid 10 percent from February to just under $1 billion. Comically, NPD's Liam Callahan did note that roughly half of the industry's sales and profits come from the digital side of things, including a hefty chunk from social network games, which the NDP hasn't found a way to account for.
Callahan estimates that the industry actually made around $1.9 billion in total, digital sales included.
Hardware sales went down 32 percent in the face of the looming generation jump.
Nintendo's 3DS remains in its own category, however, with a 9 percent jump year-over-year in hardware sales and a 50 percent increase in software sales from Fevruary to March. Big releases like Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon made that possible.
Tomb Raider, Gears of War: Judgment, God of War: Ascension and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 round out the top five below BioShock Infinite.
