Ray Allen retires from the NBA after being away for two years. In a letter to The Player's Tribune, the NBA star explained his decision and officially announced his retirement.
The 41-year old was rumored to be planning a comeback for the latest season, after a two year hiatus since the 2013-2014 season. The rumor spread after a report surfaced that a team needed a three-point shooter. All of these speculations can now be laid to rest after the news broke out about the Ray Allen retirement.
His letter to The Player's Tribune confirmed the Rey Allen retirement. The conceptual letter was written by Allen himself and was directed to his 13 year old version.
He mentioned in his letter that he is already at peace with himself and that the most important question in his life is no longer "who am I supposed to be" or what does he need to do to win the next championship. For him, the most important question now is "Daddy, guess what happened in math class today?" Which means that his retirement has brought him peace.
Before the Rey Allen retirement news broke out, he won the 2008 and 2013 NBA championships with the Celtics and the Heat, respectively. After he elevated the Heat over the Spurs with a three-point shot during the finals, Allen was lauded as the postseason hero.
His career was defined by those two championships and despite the Rey Allen retirement news, his place as one of the greatest three-point shooters of all time has already been solidified. With the 2,973 record that he has, the only player who stands a chance to match with him is Stephen Curry, and he is still lacking more than 1,300 shots.
The Rey Allen retirement update may have been expected by some but for others, they were still hoping for a comeback. But, no matter what he decides now, Allen is already well-known for his game - tying shot for Game 6 during the 2013 NBA finals. His three-point shot enabled the Heat to survive and eventually, winning the series in Game 7, making him one of the top players of the NBA.
