‘Age of Wonders 3’ Caters To Different Play Styles, Both Old And New

“Age of Wonders 3” is an upcoming turn-based strategy title from Triumph Studios that is the next iteration in the popular “Age of Wonders,” “Age of Wonders 2: The Wizard's Throne” and “Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic” franchise, which was last heard from in 2002.

Lennart Sas, director of the game, tells Polygon the new game can be played in several different ways depending on how much free time you have. The game is “meant for players who have 15 minutes here and there to play,” says Sas.

“These games going on for sometimes a couple of weeks," Sas says. "And play whenever you want — you might have ten games going on. It is old school, but [it works] for people who have busy schedules and can't commit to spending two hours a night.”

Players will now be able to set their own difficulty and change AI levels to modify the game to their level of experience. Sas says that Triumph Studios wanted to appeal to both hardcore and new players, and that it’s actually hard to please all those who prefer the Hardcore mode.

"The biggest challenges are innovating while not pissing off your core audience," Sas says. "Sometimes you take out a race and replace it by a different race or change the movement of a unit in combat ... people will start to complain and mess around in the forums. Hard to please the hardcore."

“Age of Wonders 3” will offer more than 150 units, six races and classes, and up to six heroes per army. Players will be able to conquer and transform inhabitable land as they explore.

Moreover, each tile on the game's map is open to mods, and players will have the ability to replay battles to figure out why their character died and how to prevent it in the future.

“Age of Wonders 3,” is slated to release this Fall on Windows PCs.
