Criterion Dev Squashes 'Need for Speed: Underground' Reboot Rumors

In the wake of a widespread rumor suggesting Criterion Games may be developing a reboot of "Need for Speed: Underground," the studio's creative director Alex Ward took it to the Twitter to confirm there won't be any more remakes of the title.

The rumors started with an EGM report last week about a "Need for Speed: Underground" logo allegedly sent to them by an anonymous source. "Totally fake. Remakes and Reboots? #movedon," Ward says in a tweet which was followed by another one that says, "May as well add this. Sequels.Reboots. Remakes. Been there. Done that."

The studio's most recent game was 2012's "Need for Speed: Most Wanted" reboot and the dev has yet to announce its next project.

EGM had reported that the logo in question was apparently a part of the title's box art for the Xbox 360 version of "Need for Speed: Underground" and the unnamed source also speculated that the title would be set in Bayview - though a rebooted, original Bayview, not "Underground 2′s." "While it's possible that this logo is nothing more than an early mockup - a likely scenario, given the timing, the repeated elements, and the inclusion of real-world landmarks like London's Big Ben and Rome's Colosseum -similarities between the source's report and earlier information received by EGM leads us to believe that the image is most likely linked to a real project currently in development," the report says.

The anonymous tip also mirrors the LinkedIn profiles of several Criterion employees that mention an unannounced racing title expected to release sometime in 2013.

It should be noted that the UK-based studio had previously rebooted two other "Need for Speed" titles - 2010′s "Hot Pursuit" and last year's "Most Wanted."
