PAX East 2013: 'Dungeon Defenders 2' Hands-On [IMPRESSIONS]

Do you like "League of Legends"? How about "Dota 2"? Trendy Entertainment sure does, because their follow up to their delightful 2011 tower defense/action RPG is a MOBA just like those two.

"Dungeon Defenders" was a fun tower defense game with RPG and action elements. After making its mark on the PC world it moved to the PS3 and iOS. "Dungeon Defenders 2" takes the playful cartoony visuals of the first and ups the number of characters and things those characters do. Now there are consumable potions that affect things like speed or number of attacks per second. In it's current form, which is playable on the floor of PAX East, there are five players per side and three lanes with towers in them. Minions spawn and heroes fight their way up the lane to destroy the other team's base. Trendy says there will also be a co-op mode in the game, although the competivie MOBA will release first on PC, Mac, iOS, Android and the web. The company says they won't hit this generation of consoles but may be on the next. There's more info on how the whole thing will work here.

At the moment, the camera is way too zoomed in and there is no option to zoom in or out which makes it difficult to know what is going on around you. Unlike "Dota 2" you buy potions and spells that are only good for one use. Given the game is currently meant to be a free-to-play my concern would be this mechanic turning it into a pay-to-win game.

On the plus side, there were a about 10 characters to choose from and they all looked good in action. Effects were easy to see and the game should be easy enough to pick up for anyone who's played any other MOBA.
