"Journey" took home numerous versions of Britain's gaming Oscars, the BAFTA's, on Tuesday night. They're like the Spike TV Awards but not nearly as embarrassing to watch. Unfortunately they're not quite as exciting either.
Thatgamecompany's "Journey" took home five of the 19 awards handed out. Journey’s experimental, one-note companionship-style of things beat out the more conventional shooters, competitive and cooperative, as well as Criterion’s "Need for Speed: Most Wanted" reboot.
The honorary Fellowship Award, a general, industry-improving kind of recognition, went to everyone’s favorite Valve bossman, Gabe Newell. Last month, Newell had a few choice words after being informed he would receive the award.
“Valve owes a tremendous thanks to many in the UK – to those who have played our games, to the great support of the UK press and to UK-based creative contributors,” he said. Newell joins the likes of Mario-creator Shigeru Miyamoto and other gaming visionaries as a BAFTA “fellow.”
He also took last night’s publicity as a chance to clarify Valve’s plans for the upcoming Steam Box.
Telltale Games' "The Walking Dead," Spike TV’s Game of the Year, came away the BAFTA award for year’s best story and nothing else best mobile or handheld game. It was nominated for Best Game of 2013, though Arkane Studio's "Dishonored" ultimately took the prize.
