Sales of the PlayStation Vita have increased skyrocketed in Japan in the week since Sony's regional price cut.
According to Game Watch, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan president Hiroshi Kawano told reporters that more than four times as many Vitas in the last week as they had in the two before during a presentation for "One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2."
Sony announced the plan to reduce the price of the Vita by 20 percent in Japan beginning February 28th. The cut, which knocked the price of both the Wi-Fi and 3G hardware models from 24,980 yen ($268.31) to 19,980 yen, ($214.47) was meant to compensate for the console's higher price-tag in Japan. Sony has already said that they have no plan to lower the price of the Vita in either North America or Europe.
That said, PS Vita sales haven't exactly been booming anywhere else in the world. Software support for the PS Vita has imploded because of the console's lackluster sales. Sony has said that the Vita will serve as the ideal second-screen streaming companion for the PS4, but with the console close to a year away, there's plenty of time for Sony to try and grow the console's install-base.
