While "Game of Thrones" showrunners have made it clear that they would end the HBO high-fantasy drama series after Season 8, fans are keeping their fingers crosses and hoping, even praying for a prequel or some kind of a spin-off series. Moreover, fans of the "A Song of Ice and Fire" by George R. R. Martin have been waiting endlessly for the next instalment "The Winds of Winter."
"The Winds of Winter" was expected to be unleashed after "Game of Thrones" Season 6. Now, at the recent Emmy Awards, George R.R. Martin stated that he would focus on the last two seasons of GoT and will write the last two books in the series. Although no prequel plans have been revealed, Martin said he has enough material for another TV adaptation, writes iTech Post.
When asked on the possibility of a spin-off or prequel, showrunner David Benioff clearly mentioned he wouldn't be a part of it if it happens. He cleverly passed the ball on to "The Winds of Winter" author George R.R. Martin's court.
"The Winds of Winter" author George R.R. Martin seemed more optimistic about a prequel or a spin-off, stating that it is logical to follow up "Game of Thrones" with his "Dunk & Egg" stories. While it is unclear if there will indeed be a spin-off or a prequel, one thing is for sure that showrunner Benioff and D.B. Weiss are out, reports The Telegraph.
George R.R. Martin will concentrate on the last two books of "A Song of Ice and Fire" after the TV adaptation ends its last Season 8. As to the release date of "The Winds of Winter," the sixth book, there is still no official date and Martin does not seem to be in a hurry and he has never really understood deadlines.
Thus, fans can only wait for the "Game of Thrones" Season 7, which is being filmed in Belfast. Sophie Turner, who plays the character of Sansa Stark, hinted that not all beloved characters will make it to the final season. Similarly, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who plays Jaime Lannister, teased about characters meeting someone from Season 1. Stay tuned to GamenGuide for more "The Winds of Winter" news and updates!
