‘Wonder Woman’ News & Update: DC Comics, Whataburger In A Friendly Trademark Discussion Over New Logo

Wonder Woman has been known for almost a century for defending the oppressed from many different kinds of evils, but it appears that she is facing a big challenge right now. This time however, she will not be fighting any strong and mighty comic villain alongside the Justice League, but has an issue with a fast-food chain Whataburger.

AV Club reported that Whataburger and DC Comics are undergoing what they call a friendly trademark discussion over the new "Wonder Woman" logo. As such, the two will be discussing how similar the new "Wonder Woman" logo is to the Texas-based fast food joint's, which it has been using since 1972.

The two parties are not heading to court for a legal battle yet, but the fact is DC and Warner Brothers could be expanding the "Wonder Woman" trademark. This expansion could go as far as covering some food items and that apparently is making Whataburger a little nervous. However, Whataburger appears friendlier than it seems as it even said that it "supports superheroes like Wonder Woman and The Justice League." After all, Whataburger might just want to make sure that Warner Brothers and DC would not launch a Wonder Woman themed competitor food chain pretty soon.

Newsarama added that Whataburger even said that "it is not at war with Wonder Woman over her newly redesigned logo." And that they own superhero mascot Whataguy, might even love to team up with Wonder Woman to battle evil together if given the opportunity. Whataburger's signature "W" shaped logo originated way back in 1972 and in 1985, both Whataburger and DC acknowledged that both logos are separate trademarks. Reports however say, that Whataburger now feels that the new reinvented Wonder Woman logo is just too similar to their trademark.

When Whataburger consented to the "Wonder Woman" trademark registration back then, they did so knowing that it was not for food or similar items. It had the understanding that the "Wonder Woman" logo would be used for comics, toys and other connected franchise items which will not be a problem for them. With "Wonder Woman" to become more visible with her solo film in 2017 and an upcoming Justice League film, maybe this issue could be resolved with finality soon.
