An unlikely successor has dethroned the decades anticipated comeback of a new Star Wars franchise when it comes to trailer views in 24 hours. The official trailer of "Fifty Shades Darker" was viewed 114 million times across different platforms in the first 24 hours.
Hollywood Reporter said that the trailer was released on Wednesday at 8am and immediately went on fire as views would not stop coming in. The count was based across different online platforms which include Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, and many more and within the first hour alone, the trailer received 2.5 million views.
The trailer garnered over 39.4 million views in North America, but the bulk of viewership came from many different international markets which include UK, Mexico and France. Before breaking this record, the most views for a full length trailer in 24 hours was for "The Force Awakens, which had 112 million views. The trailer shows Christian Grey and Anna apparently attending a ballroom event wherein they have to wear a dark mask. Of course, a lot of steamy shower and bed scenes in which the franchise is best known for was teased.
Cinema Blend reported that a movie from the "Fifty Shades" franchise might not be very likely to knock of an anticipated comeback of Star Wars. However, when one thinks deeper about it, "Fifty Shades" actually has a colossal amount of supporters across the globe even with its R rating. The strong fan base had already been there even before the first movie was debuted, and a lot of them have read all three books in the series. Aside from that, the first movie "Fifty Shades of Grey" did fairly decent in sales figures, even considering some restrictions such as viewer rating and being banned in different jurisdictions.
"Fifty Shades of Grey" was still able to rake in $570 million worldwide with just a $40 million budget while smashing different records. These new records which were broken include the highest grossing R-Rated film overseas and the highest February opening weekend for a movie. "Fifty Shades Darker" will again star Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson and will be debuting in select theaters worldwide on Feb 10, 2017.
