Sony to Replicate Pokemon Go's Success, Calls ForwardWorks Towards Mobile Gaming

Sony executive Kazuo Hirai hints adding mobile-based games into the company's list of platforms including PlayStation. Hirai admits Pokemon Go's unprecedented success in mobile gaming, giving Sony the idea of replicating the process.

Currently, Sony is working within their own brand PlayStation console but plans to revive "PlayStation Mobile," ScreenRant reports. The original idea for the scrapped project in 2015 is to give flexibility to PlayStation Vita and other Android devices. However, the project met lukewarm reception that led to its demise.

Hirai said that games like Pokemon Go proves that mobile games can also capture the market. Nintendo's success in Pokemon Go sets the challenge for Sony's mobile developer ForwardWorks. One path that it can follow is the renewed interest in Augmented Reality technology. The only remaining question now is which game title among popular PlayStation franchise could follow suit.

To recall, Pokemon Go reaped $440 million since July when it invaded mobile platform. Nintendo's stocks skyrocketed due to new heights and confirms other game titles to be out soon. However, the real winner in this record achievement is Niantic Labs who owns a huge profit share. Niantic is the brain behind Pokemon Go's development.

IGN reports that one potential avenue where Sony can give additional details is the Tokyo Game Show that is scheduled on Sept 13. Gamers are now speculating that ForwardWorks will unveil some classic PlayStation titles in this date. Hirai also "indirectly" confirmed that they are boosting chances with titles that has intellectual property.

Hirai call the new strategy "aggressive" under the context of striking while gamers are still hot in trail of alternatives. Recent data shows that Pokemon Go peaks at more than 70 million users before the end of August. There is also a bit of decline in the number of active players, prompting tech companies to timely steal the show.
