'Uncharted' Release Date, Latest News & Update: Sony Unlists Film's Release Date

Bad news for fans who are eager to see Naughty Dog's "Uncharted" on the big screen, as Sony has officially dropped the release date from the project. The film adaptation has been in development since at least 2009 and to this day has gone through several directors, but still to no avail.

According to Coming Soon, Sony Pictures has removed "Uncharted" from their release calendar, leaving the original schedule of June 30, 2017 up for grabs for any other production. Just a few weeks ago, news broke out that Joe Carnahan has joined the project as a screenwriter, but it seems that production is doing a large-scale overhaul, thus the indeterminate release date.

Gamerant reports that Carnahan took to Twitter to gush about the "Uncharted" film, implying that there is already a script, but it seems that the studio hasn't moved forward from there yet. No actors or actresses have been linked to the project as of late, but it did go through several directors before landing on Carnahan. David O'Russell ("American Hustle," "Joy"), Neil Burger ("Limitless," "Divergent"), and Seth Gordon ("Horrible Bosses," "Pixels," "Baywatch") were all linked to the project at one point.

Forbes' Paul Tassi writes that a film adaptation for Naughty Dog's "Uncharted" may not be necessary at all, given that the game already plays well cinematically. Moreover, it will be difficult to attach high profile names such as John Krasinski, Jake Gyllenhaal, Chris Pratt, and Michael Fassbender to a very flimsy project, and it may take a while for Sony to reboot the whole thing.

With Carnahan at the helm, however, fans will have to wait and see where he can take the production (hopefully to cinemas, soon). "Unchartered" was originally released in 2007 for PlayStation 3. The latest iteration of the game, titled "Uncharted 4: A Thief's End," was released last May, selling over 2.7 million copies worldwide within the first week of its release.
