"Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Phantoms," Ubisoft's tactical first shooter free to play online multiplayer game, will finally be folding up soon. Apparently, the game was not making enough money to justify keeping in running.
Ubisoft made the announcement to end "Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Phantoms" via the game's official site. In the meantime, gamers can still play the game until it is taken offline by December 1, 2016.
The "Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Phantoms" shop will remain open until the end should players wish to make use of their Ghost coins. However, the company announced that they won't be selling Ghost coins to players anymore.
"Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Phantoms" was originally launched back in 2012 is a beta when it was still known as Ghost Recon Online. According to the Q&A being released, "GRP was not as successful as we had hoped for" prompting Ubisoft to decide the game's closure.
The closure of "Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Phantoms" seems to follow recent industry trend with regards to free online games. According to Engadget, Microsoft also cancelled the Russian version of Halo Online.
This highlights the risk associated with investing real money into free to play titles as there is absolutely no guarantee how long they will be around. In the case of "Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Phantoms" closure, no refund will be made to any money invested into the game by players.
It will not just be "Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Phantoms" that Ubisoft decided to end. In fact, three other PC-based titles has been announced for closure as well.
These include "Tom Clancy's Endwar Online," "The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot" as well "Might & Magic Duel of Champions." The games will see their closure earlier that "Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Phantoms" as all three titles are scheduled to go offline by October 25th.
