Castle Wolfenstein To Be Made Into Movie; Oscar-Winner Roger Avary To Direct

Classic first-person shooter game Castle Wolfenstein will be made into a movie. Panorama Media and Samuel Hadida announced Nov. 1 that Oscar-winner Roger Avary will script and direct the movie.

Director Roger Avary has previously co-written "Pulp Fiction" with Quentin Tarantino, for which he won Best Original Screenplay Oscar. Avary has also written the screenplay for Konami's game Silent Hill.

The movie is described as action-adventure.

"The story follows a young US Army Captain and a British Special Agent on a top secret mission to Castle Wolfenstein, where Hitler will be for the unveiling of a new secret weapon.  After reaching the Castle, our heroes are confronted with Himmler's SS Paranormal Division and must fight, not only for their survival, but for a mission that could alter the course of the War," said a press release, as reported by Collider.

Castle Wolfenstein is considered the grandfather of first-person shooters. The game debuted in 1981 and was designed for Atari 800 and Commodore 64. In 1992, the series was rebooted as Wolfenstein 3D.

The game was originally developed and published by Muse Software. The rebooted series was developed by id Software.

"I've been playing the Wolfenstein games since I was a kid, and feel that their outlandish sensibility has deeply influenced my own writing and directing throughout my career," said Avary.

The movie adaptation of Castle Wolfenstein will be a fusion between "Captain America" and "Inglorious Basterds".

"The film involves a classic assault on the bad guys, who are nominally Nazis, more evocative of 'Inglorious Basterds' than the actual World War II. It is a vaguely futuristic retro world as fun as 'Captain America', which has recently been reintroduced to the world audience with great success," Hadida added.
