First person sandbox video game Minecraft has topped the list of most-played game on Xbox 360, according to the listing published on Major Nelson's Web site, Oct. 24.
The previous holder of this honor was the Call of Duty series, which now stands at second spot. The two-year reign of Call of Duty series has come to an end, Kotaku reports. It has always been first person shooters that are the most-played games on Xbox 360.
Minecraft made its debut on Xbox 360 on May 9. The independent game was listed on the top of two lists, "Xbox 360 Top LIVE Titles" and "Top Arcade Titles." Minecraft hit the number one spot in the week of Oct. 15.
Major Nelson does not release these figures frequently. There is a reason behind him releasing these figures. "Minecraft going to No. 1 is, frankly, historic, and not just because it isn't a shooter. It's a downloadable title. And even if Mojang is a zillion-dollar enterprise, this still is considered an indie game. An indie game that knocked Call of Duty from its No. 1 perch, two weeks before its next game comes out," Kotaku reports.
Meanwhile, Ubisoft revealed Oct. 16 that it will be announcing Far Cry 3 modification (mods) for Minecraft. The Far Cry 3 map and texture pack is now reportedly available for Minecraft. The mods will include Far Cry-themed weapons, environments, tools and characters including Vaas, Jason and Citra.
In other news, Minecraft gets a Halloween-themed 1.4 update "with new enemies, crafting tools and decorations for users to mess around with," Kotaku reported.
The studio also released 55 Halloween-themed skins for Minecraft for Xbox 360. The skins pack cost just 160 Microsoft Points, or $2. The profit from this will go to four charities - Block by Block, SANDS Lothians, Child's Play and Macmillan Cancer Support, as reported by SlashGear Oct. 26.
