It seems that Disney has found a new formula for their princess films.
Following the success of "Brave," which was released in 2012, and the massive hit "Frozen" back in 2013, the studio is banking on the first ever Polynesian princess in the form of Moana, who, like Elsa and Merida, will not have any love interest in the upcoming film arriving in November.
Fans who were present at yesterday's San Diego Comic Con were given a first look at "Moana." Which stars Hawaiian actress Auli'i Cravalho as the titular character, and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as Maui, the demi-god of the wind and sea who meets Moana in her journey to become a heroine.
According to the Los Angeles Times, directors Ron Clements and John Musker shared during the SDCC Q&A portion that "Moana" will not get a love interest in the upcoming film. Instead, it seems that Moana will find a sidekick in the form of the ocean, as seen in a recently released clip by Disney, which was also showcased during the SDCC.
It was also confirmed that The Rock, who recently launched his YouTube channel and thereby upping his social media game, will be performing a song especially written by Tony Award-winning playwright and "Hamilton" musical star, Lin Manuel Miranda. Earlier this year, the "Hamilton" rapper already hinted during his press appearances that Disney had approached him for the "Moana" film, for which he was to write music. His name is also prominently featured in the first trailer, in which viewers can hear him sing.
Miranda is currently on vacation, following his departure from "Hamilton." The actor is set to star alongside Emily Blunt in the upcoming "Mary Poppins Returns" film. Meanwhile, The Rock debuted his YouTube channel with the help of social media personality Lilly Singh in a hilarious clip, which can be viewed below.
"Moana" arrives in theaters this November 23.
