Since the year started with numerous introduction of Virtual Reality devices, Samsung will be releasing a follow up version of its Gear VR device. It is said that the Korea-based tech giant is now prepping up to release an updated Gear VR, dubbed as Gear VR 2, which would serve as a companion to Galaxy Note 7.
According to Galaxy Club, India's import and export data Zauba listed a possible next generation Gear VR, along with the much-anticipated Samsung Galaxy Note 7. In July 4, the said import database listed a Gear VR variant with a model code SM-R323, tagging it as a material for testing and evaluation purposes.
Based on the Gear VR 2's model code, it may indeed be a companion for the upcoming Galaxy Note 7, as the very first Gear VR with R320 model code was released for Note 4, R321 code was issued for Galaxy S6, while R322 model code was released for the current Gear VR Consumer Edition.
Although the listing may serve as a proof that the Gear VR 2 would be a Note 7 companion, other reports emerged that the updated Gear VR version may likely be independent from using a Galaxy smartphone.
According to Poket-lint, since the current Gear VR requires a Samsung Galaxy smartphone in order to work, the upcoming Samsung Gear VR 2 may be the opposite. It is said that the much-anticipated updated Gear VR may offer wireless virtual reality that does not necessarily need a physical hardware or PC.
Samsung's head of R&D for software already confirmed that they are working on wireless VR devices during Samsung's developers conference, which was held in San Francisco, though no official confirmation yet coming from the company if Gear VR 2 is included on those devices.
Meanwhile, in terms of Gear VR 2's release, rumor has it that the VR device, along with Samsung's new offerings, will be unveiled during Samsung's Unpacked event, which will be held in New York on Aug. 2.
