If there's one thing we're glad about "Game of Thrones" season six, it's that we're finally moving closer to the end. The North has stabilized under Jon Snow (or Stark), Cersei Lannister has consolidated and established her power in King's Landing, and Daenerys Targaryen has finally mobilized after finding and creating a coalition that would support her Westeros reign.
Team Daenerys is funny, though: it's a mix of Freedmen, Tyrell, Sand (from Dorne), and Ironborn from the Iron Islands, led by their new (de facto) queen, Yara Greyjoy. And one of the more interesting happenings on that front, of course, was Daenerys and Yara getting in a little flirting with one another back in the ninth episode of this season.
We all know that Yara Greyjoy is a lesbian (among many other queer characters in "Game of Thrones"), so was this chemistry truly intended? According to actress Gemma Whelan, it was not. "It just turned out that Emilia [Clarke] and I had some chemistry going on!" said Whelan in an interview with Vulture.
But beyond that, there's not much about a budding romance. Although both Whelan and fellow actress Emilia Clarke, who plays Daenerys in "Game of Thrones", are very much open to and interested in the idea of Yara and Daenerys being more than just friends, they do not insist it on the writers, leaving the relationship's direction very much up to them. At the end of the day, unless the writers make it otherwise, whatever they feel is immaterial.
"Game of Thrones" reportedly only has 13 episodes left before the entire story ends, so if the showrunners feel that a Yara/Daenerys relationship is that important, they'll find enough space in that precious amount of time to fit it in. Otherwise, this could be very much like Brienne and Tormund: something that just exists in the hearts of the fans.
