Even though Tony Stark's personal arc wrapped up in "Iron Man 3" and continued instead in the "Avengers" and "Captain America" movies, the rumors of a possible "Iron Man 4" release are still spreading online.
With zero focus on Marvel Studios' part to build on the "Iron Man" solo franchise (preferring instead to build new properties and advance the Avengers as a team) many are quite unsure as to whether Tony Stark's story is advancing in a new sequel. Robert Downey Jr., the man who plays Tony Stark in the movies, may be a little too old for "Iron Man 4" when it supposedly comes out in 2020. The man will be 55 years old, and in the comics, Tony Stark is forever only in his 40s.
If "Iron Man 4" is slated to come out in 2020, that places it a year after both parts of "Avengers: Infinity War" are shown in theaters. With "Infinity War" having wide-reaching implications in the entire Marvel Cinematic/Extended Universe, it's highly unclear what "Iron Man 4" will be all about, assuming Tony Stark is still even alive, or in, the universe.
The way around this, according to a story by Vine Report, is for "Iron Man 4" to be a prequel of sorts (when it comes out in 2020) as it could depict what happens after the events of "Captain America: Civil War." It definitely makes sense, as we don't yet know how Marvel Studios is going to fill in the story gaps between "Civil War" and "Avengers: Infinity War," besides fleshing the story out in "Black Panther" and "Spider-Man: Homecoming." There's still a lot of ground left to cover as regards the fallout between Iron Man and Captain America after "Civil War."
We'll have updates for "Iron Man 4"'s release date as soon as we get new developments.
