There are rumors that a crossover project featuring "Killer Instinct" and "Mortal Kombat" may be coming soon. Xbox head Phil Spencer shared that he is interested in the concept, although development has yet to be discussed and confirmed.
Previously, NetherRealm boss Ed Boon tweeted that he would love to have a "Killer Instinct" project. However, a crossover will need to be Xbox exclusive. Spencer replied that he also loved the idea, suggesting that a Mortal Kombat/Killer Instinct might be in place soon.
GameRant wrote that the short exchange between the two heads certainly thrilled several fans, although it is worthy to note that nothing is definite until an official agreement is reached. Gamers can at least be assured that both parties are aware and interested on a potential Mortal Kombat/Killer Instinct crossover project. Currently, "Mortal Kombat" is playable on any platform, while "Killer Instinct" is exclusive to Xbox.
There will be much to talk about if a Mortal Kombat/Killer Instinct crossover is actually planned. The game developers will have to determine the type of gameplay. The two titles are fighting games that include several combos. However the two also showcase various options in terms of genre. The parties will also have to discuss the art style, since MK tends to be very bloody and violent, while KI has a more cartoonish appearance. The two companies will further have to agree on the characters that will appear, and whether it will be a one-time deal or a developing series, depending on how well the market responds.
GameSpot noted that in the meantime, Xbox and NetherRealm are busy working on current titles. "Killer Instinct" recently introduced the DLC character, General RAAM, from the Gears of War series. The next game that it is set to release is "Injustice 2," in 2017. As for "Mortal Kombat X," Boon stated that they will provide $50,000 to the Evo Mortal Kombat XL pot bonus at the upcoming tournament, Evo.
According to Cinema Blend, there are a number of great characters that could make the jump if a Mortal Kombat/Killer Instinct crossover project happens. The styles of Kotal Khan, Erron Black and D'Vorah would be ideal in the collaboration. Other good characters to include are Scorpion, Raiden and Sub-Zero. Fulgore and Jago would be good for "Mortal Kombat."
If a Mortal Kombat/Killer Instinct crossover happens, it will most likely follow Boon's suggestion of keeping it exclusive to Xbox.
