First, it was a novel. Then, it turned into a world-renowned Broadway musical. Now, the famous Wicked Witch of the West is set to have its own movie, which fittingly sticks to its famous title, "Wicked."
Universal Pictures announced the arrival of the "Wicked" movie through its official Twitter account on Thursday.

"The musical phenomenon 'WICKED' comes to the big screen," the caption read, which also featured the teaser photo of "Wicked." The film adaptation release date is set for Dec. 20, 2019.
However, even if it's still a long wait, Hollywood Reporter cited that "Wicked" already has a competitor with an unrevealed Disney movie. Moreover, people who are going to work on "Wicked" are all set.
"Wicked" will be produced by Marc Platt with Universal Pictures, who have also been the producers of the long-running Broadway musical, based on Gregory Maguire's "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West."
"Wicked" will be directed by Stephen Daldry. A reunion of the stage show's writer Winnie Holzman and composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz will also take place for the "Wicked" film adaptation.
E! News reported that "Wicked" tells the story of Elphaba, the green-skinned protagonist, and the good witch Galinda in the world of Oz long before Dorothy arrived.
However, there is no announcement made who will play the said roles in "Wicked" the movie, but the original Broadway production stars' Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel might be a great fit.
To recall, Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel first started in the "Wicked" the Musical. It has been 13 years since the stage show became a hit and gathered more than a whopping $3 billion, as per The Verge.
In fact, after the first year "Wicked" the Musical was shown, plans for the movie adaptation had been announced.
Evidently, Universal Pictures was in no hurry to release a movie version of "Wicked" with a more affordable ticket price.
