Floyd Mayweather Jr. continues to tinker with the idea of possibly facing Conor McGregor in a unique match and has tipped the pot a bit by reportedly offering $50 million to the Irishman.
Per TMZ, the offer includes having the fight happen on New Year’s Eve in Las Vegas though the large sum is considered meager if one does the math if such a blockbuster bout happens.
The report further claims that McGregor is allegedly game to face Mayweather but the problem is that the flamboyant one may have dangled the offer to the wrong group. McGregor has his hands tied on the matter since UFC president Dana White will still have the last say on the matter.
If ever Mayweather is indeed serious with the $50 million offer, White is not expected to agree on it. The amount is considered not even close to pay-per-view buys and actual fight revenues reeled in if ever the two big names would clash in the ring.
McGregor is considered a bigger draw of the two, owing to his last couple of fights. While “The Notorious did lose to Nate Diaz at UFC 196, the fact is that McGregor is a bigger star over Mayweather in Europe, Australia and Canada.
McGregor was originally scheduled to face Diaz again for UFC 200 but the rematch was pulled after the Irishman refused to take part in the promotional tour. “The Notorious” is likely to make his return at UFC 202.
For Mayweather, he was last seen in the ring back in September against Andre Berto. It was his last fight to officially register a 49-0 record but has since reiterated that he has retired.
Mayweather has yet to approach White if he is indeed interested. For some, ongoing talks are nothing more than attention and hype though all that could change if “big money” is on the table.
