Blizzard will be releasing its new attempt at thwarting goldfarmers as a part of World of Warcraft's patch 6.1.2, which will hopefully drop next week.

The aptly named WoW Token is a secure and legitimate way to purchase gold without going through a 3rd party (read: gold farmer) and also as a way to turn all of your in-game profits into that most precious of resources, time.
The company made a new overview video that helps explain the various ins and outs of the token, which admittedly can be a little hard to wrap your head around. Essentially, players with real world cash (perhaps the more casual ones) can buy a WoW Token on the in-game shop (which features little more than extra mounts and some skins, no powerups) and then put it on the game's Auction House for whatever the current market value.

Whatever the price of a WoW Token is at the time you put it up is the price it will go for; it does not fluctuate in price like a stock. A player may then purchase the token for gold, giving you - the seller - a large amount of extra in-game currency to purchase and repair items. The buyer, meanwhile, gets 30 days of extra subscription time.
"When the rollout begins in the Americas game region, players in North America, Latin America, and Oceania will all be able to purchase a WoW Token from the in-game Shop. In the Americas game region, the price of a Token will be $20 USD (or roughly equivalent in each local currency)."
It's an intriguing concept, one that I hope will work. Goldfarming can ruin the spirit of the community, and is a huge hassle when navigating chats. By turning money and time into gold (but not simply by purchasing gold), the token system should give the power to the players with regards to the excess gold that proliferates on many of the game's servers.
