343 and Microsoft are imploring Halo fans to "hunt the truth" about events in Halo 5: Guardians, and they're mkaing that quite the difficult task.

The two companies announced the game's release date last night in a trailer from the perspective of Spartan Locke, the video we included in our news of the launch day. Locke is a character from the live action Halo: Nightfall series that will be present in Halo 5, and in the trailer he's shown giving a monologue about Master Chief's failures before pointing a gun at the series' icon.

Whatever has gone wrong, according to Locke Master Chief has brought it upon himself, and endangered and betrayed everyone rather than saving them. His words are convincing, but a second trailer with the roles switched turns the narrative on its head. In the follow-up trailer, below, Master Chief is the one giving the dialogue and pointing a gun at an injured Locke.

The dialogue is noticabley not exactly mirrored, though--Locke is blaming Chief for being a traitor and failing his duty, while Chief tells Locke he's completed his mission. It doesn't necessarily cast the series protagonist as the 'good guy' despite the role reversel--he could be acting sinisterly, and his tone doesn't exactly deny that. Hopefully some people out there hunting the truth can uncover more clues.

"We wanted Halo 5: Guardians to be the game that pays off the epic promise of the Halo universe in scope and scale and drama," said Bonnie Ross, Head of 343 Industries. "We want to amaze players with the sheer size of the worlds and battles they'll experience, even as they question everything they thought they knew about its heroes, marvels and mysteries. #HunttheTruth is only the beginning and we can't wait to debut the game to Xbox fans around the world at E3 this June."
