Electric cars are clean and efficient, but the fear persists that they'll run out of juice before getting to a destination, leaving drivers stranded.

Tesla founder Elon Musk is aiming to end what he calls "range anxiety" with a press conference on Thursday. The solution? It doesn't seem to be new hardware, physical upgrades, or entirely new cars--just a software update.
Electric cars generally have a shorter range than traditional vehicles, and the dread of the idea that you're out on the road running low on charge is understandable. Gas stations don't do the job, and even with the fact that Tesla can go a considerable amount farther than most electrics (rated federally at a 265 mile range, and the company installed a network of Superchargers between cities), people get nervous.

The tweet above is Musk's announcement of this press conference that will put the fears at ease, though he has not been at all specific about what it will entail. We know an update beamed to Tesla vehicles will help the issue, but what's the nature of the fix? Telsa could be implementing a system that better informs drivers of how far they can go and where the nearest chargers are to help plan trips, which wouldn't fix the range itself but put drivers' minds at ease. Or, the update could change or reduce vehicle performance to allow for more mileage. We won't know for sure until the press conference later this week.
