Square Enix has partnered with mobile game titan DeNA to bring Final Fantasy: Record Keeper to iOS and Android devices later this spring.
Final Fantasy Type-0 HD Gameplay Trailer Outlines Upcoming Mechanics
Record Keeper will pull dozens of characters from the entire series, the kind of characters who need no last name (nor introductions) - Cloud, Tidus, Tiffa, Rinoa, Lightning, Celes - which players can mix and match to form teams to take on challenges and enemies. All in classic 8-bit sprite forms. Characters can each be completely customized and equipped to the fullest with iconic gear, powerful spells, summons, and hundreds of weapons to choose from.
While it almost sounds like it should be a MOBA - aside, why is there no Final Fantasy MOBA yet? - it is a somewhat more traditional turn based combat mechanic featuring the Active Time Battle system. "Players battle their way through the most epic Final Fantasy moments, woven together for the first time on mobile with an all-new tale. Featuring skill-based interactive gameplay, players plan attacks, carefully choose tactics, and engage enemies in active time battles."

The game is currently out in Japan and has received over 5 million downloads since launch. You can pre-register for the game at the official site and get Tidus (FF X) for free
"Final Fantasy: Record Keeper delivers the ultimate Final Fantasy experience for the dedicated and passionate fans of this franchise and we are excited to work with Squae Enix to bring it to players worldwide this spring," said Shintaro Asako, CEO of DeNA West.
The game will be out this spring at an as yet unspecified time and will be free to play. One wonders how the F2P elements will be handled.
But serious, can we get a Final Fantasy MOBA? That'd be amazing.
