Skype Launches A Preview Of Skype Translator, Offering Live Speech Translation Between English And Spanish

Skype Translator, a service that allows Skype calls to translate speech live, has launched in preview form today.

Microsoft Is Holding An Event In January To Talk About The Consumer Aspect Of Windows 10

With Skype Translator, not only can Skype allow two people to talk face-to-face from different corners of the globe, but it can now allow people who don't even speak the same language to have a conversation. The program uses voice recognition and live translation to facilitate conversation between an English speaker and Spanish speaker, and machine learning assures that the system will only get better over time.

As of now, the speech translation is only available between Spanish and English. More than 40 languages are available for translation in Skype's instant messenger, though, and more languages are planned to be introduced to the spoken translation service.

Customers who are interested in checking out this neat little Skype feature can sign up for the preview. The preview is only available to computers and mobile devices that run Windows 8.1.

To show off just what Skype Translator can do, Skype published a video of two elementary schools – one in Tacoma, Washington, and one in Mexico City – talking with each other and playing a game of 20 Questions to see if they could guess where the other school was located. The two classes proceed to breeze past the language barrier and carry on a conversation while Skype acts as the middle man. You can check out the video below.
