Google announced that, in an effort to get the word out about Google Wallet – Google's years-old equivalent of Apple Pay – it will start handing out $5 bonuses to anyone who refers a friend to the service.

In an announcement on a Google Support page (thanks, 9to5Google), Google laid out the $5 bonus plan. If you already have a Google Wallet Balance, you can send any amount of money to a friend who has never had a Wallet Balance before. Once you both verify your identities, both of you will receive a $5 kickback courtesy of Google's deep pockets within three business days. One user can take advantage of this promotion up to 20 times, netting them a total of $100.
The deal will last until November 30 or until Google Wallet reaches 20,000 referrals, whichever comes first. With a maximum expenditure of $100,000 for the whole deal, this could end up being a relatively cheap advertising campaign by Google's standards.
The Apple Watch SDK Is Now Live For Developers
This promotion only applies to U.S. residents, but if you live in the States, you can start your hunt for $5 bonuses until the end of the month.
With the early success of Apple Pay expanding NFC support across the retail world, it makes sense that Google will want to get the word out better about their own digital wallet service. Maybe with wider support from both the iOS and Android sides of the aisle, NFC payments will really start to take off.
