Corsair M65 RGB Laser PC Gaming Mouse Review: A Must-Have For FPS Players, With Infinite Color Customization

Our Review Of Corsair's M65 Gaming Mouse

Corsair has just launched Corsair Gaming, a new division with a new logo that seeks to dominate the world of high-end PC peripherals. Judging from their new line-up they're well on their way- after spending the last month with them we simply can't imagine going back to anything else.

Our Review Of The K70 RGB Keyboard: One Of The Best Gaming Keyboards You Can Buy

Today we’re taking a look at the M65 RGB Gaming Mouse. This is a high-end mouse that boasts an aluminum chassis, a 8,200 DPI laser sensor, eight programmable buttons. and an insane amount of color backlighting customization.

The mouse comes in two different styles- soft touch (with gunmetal black or military green colors) or high gloss in arctic white. The two choices are more for feel than anything. Our review model came was the high gloss selection, which offers a nice and smooth top. It may not be the right feel for everyone but your hand grips the more rugged sides perfectly no matter what. It's ergonomic and incredibly comfortable, but there's one thing it's not, and that's made for left-handed gamers. They simply don't have a left-handed model so 10-15% of you will have to look elsewhere for a gaming mouse.

The M65 is made for first person shooters, though, as you should realize when you see the little red target button that rests alongside your right thumb. Hold this button down this button and the DPI automatically changes to the lowest setting, meaning that your mouse will move incredibly slowly, affording you more accuracy when you really need it. In practice it’s also handy for web browsing if you normally like to keep the DPI up high and zoom around the page.

The top of the mouse includes up and down switches that let you change the DPI on the fly as well, which is great because you don't have to go into the settings to tweak things whenever you want to change games.

Everything feels like it will last forever, and considering that the Omron switches are rated for 20 million clicks, they just might. The aluminum chassis can take a beating and the rubber scrolling wheel is nice and chunky, accurate enough to click up or down once to select a weapon and fast enough to speed through a list.

This is a wired mouse but it offers a lengthy seven foot cable, a nice sturdy braided one that won’t be breaking anytime soon. Mouse feel too heavy for you? There are three weights built into the bottom that can be easily removed with a flathead screwdriver or coin, allowing you to set your center of gravity as you please.

This is the exact same mouse as the standard M65 but, as with Corsair Gaming’s new RGB Keyboards, the M65 RGB features customized backlighting, here featured in three different zones on the mouse (the new logo is what you'll see most, however). Downloading the Corsair Utility Engine (CUE) software is mandatory, as it allows you to easily play with the lighting patterns on each zone and customize what each of the eight buttons do.

The mouse doesn’t have the highest DPI of some of the models on the market but honestly, you should be fine with 8,200. At that setting you can tap your mouse and the cursor will fly across the screen, so unless you’re the twitchiest of twitch gamers you will be nowhere near that setting anyway.

The M65 really is built for first-person shooters, however. The sniper button is invaluable while aiming down sights in a number of games. We have tested it out in everything from Killing Floor to Battlefield to Team Fortress 2 and it’s absolutely improved our game, the sniper button allowing us to make easy headshots. The mouse offers less obvious benefits for RTS titles or MOBAs but it still holds up as a solid mouse you’ll want to use every day.

Corsair Gaming has another newly released mouse, the Corsair Gaming Sabre RGB Mouse, which comes in both laser and optical sensor versions and offers an incredibly lightweight body. We will have a review of that up soon, but if you're a FPS gamer you likely won't find anything better than the M65 RGB. Another direct hit from Corsair!
