Retro City Rampage DX Out Today On PSN: Play On PS4, PS3 Or Vita With 3X Cross Buy & Cross Save, Limited Edition Retail PS4 Version Available

Retro City Rampage DX Out Today On PSN

In 2012, Brian Provinciano released Retro City Rampage after nearly ten years of development. The game is a melange of genres although ostensibly it plays like one of the original Grand Theft Auto games, a top-down shooter where you steal cars and kill people. The thing that made it so genius is the sheer amount of references in it- far too many to count, pulling from everything from Back to the Future to Saved by the Bell to Smash TV to even Maniac Mansion.

Now, we have Retro City Rampage DX. The game has been constantly updated and improved since its release but this is a complete remastering of almost everything in the game. Every single mission has been re-turned, adding waypoints, checkpoints, and adjusting the difficulty. The weapons and vehicles are enhanced and there's new visual effects. The camera is closer and more dynamic (something he learned from making the 3DS version) and the Vita version has a completely new UI that adds touch functionality and a new zoom mode.

The controls have been tweaked, there are new, easier trophies, and even a Jukebox that lets you listen to a staggering 147 chiptune tracks from the game. Basically, everything is better.

PS4 System Update 2.01 Now Live, Fixes Rest Mode Crash Issue From Version 2.00

Sadly for those of us who already own Retro City Rampage on PSN, you won't be able to upgrade for free, but the game is five bucks cheaper than the original version ($9.99- on sale this week for $7.99) and offers enough new features that it should be worth it regardless. Also- your saves will carry over to the new version.

Fans of the game will be excited to learn that there's even a limited edition PS4 retail disc available to preorder now. It's limited to only 2,000 units and comes with a reversible cover, the digital soundtrack, and some more freebies for $25, and is by far the rarest PS4 game ever made.

In a recent PlayStation blog Provinciano mentions that Sony really has thrown in with indie games- not only can they self-publish downloadable games, they can self-publish retail versions as well. Pretty amazing.

Make sure to check out the game today on PSN- it's an absolute blast and is whole-heartedly recommended .
