The days are cooling. The leaves change color and the faint aroma of pumpkin fills the air. The world is starting to sleep again, and all manner of spirits come out to play.
Family Guy: The Quest For Stuff Halloween Update Is An 80s Horror Fan's Dream
There is perhaps no better platform for those spirits to play than iOS. There are thousands of games out there, some good, some bad, some great. But what to play? In such a large sea, how do you figure out what's worth playing?
Leave that to us. In celebration of Halloween this Friday, we have compiled a list of the X horror titles you need to play to get yourself in a proper witching mood. There are plenty of excellent titles out there, ports, originals, sequels that we couldn't contain them all in one list. The best part is that you can bring these games with you anywhere.
Dinosaurs Jump Onto The PS4 With Primal Rage: Extinction
Find a suitable place, dark and alone, and try out the following:
5. The Nightjar - $3.99. - ideal for a quiet, dark room. The much heralded 2012 title features the voice, and nothing but the voice, of Benedict Cumberbatch. The audio-only sci-fi game puts you on a derelict spaceship where...something is hunting you. Imagine Alien: Isolation. Now imagine all the lights are off. Not even the silky brogue of Sherlock Holmes will be enough to calm your fears when It comes calling. Headphones are absolutely required. Watch the trailer. You can also check out Papa Sangre II, a similar Day of the Dead audio tale featuring Sean Bean.
4. Year Walk - $3.99 - a touch screen version of the hit indie title, Year Walk is not a horror title in the traditional sense. Though it does not lack for jump scares, the game seeks to unnerve you with its Scandinavian atmosphere and desolate, sad story of loss and the future. The art style is sublime and the puzzles vary in difficulty, but the experience is nerve wracking, intense in a cyclopean manner: there is something terribly wrong with the world, you just have to look right beneath the surface. About the only bad thing we can say about Year Walk is that it's too damn short. But it can be replayed. Watch the trailer.
3. Home - $2.99 - Home was originally a Steam title that got ported for handheld and features a non-realistic art style that makes things a thousand times creepier. There is nothing inherently terrifying about Home; there is no specter trying to consume you (like certain titles on this list) and the narrative can shift dramatically, imperceptibly, depending on your own actions. The touch controls are good, but not great and a few recent updates have fixed some gameplay issues. Short and to the point, but the open-ended structure of the narrative, as it is, lends itself to many playthroughs, each of varying levels of unease and yes, horror. Trailer.
2. Eyes - the horror game - $0.99 / free demo available - one of the best Slender-like titles, Eyes takes all of ten seconds to send a chill down your spine. The job was easy: break into the house, grab the money and get out. Nobody told you you would not be alone. Mysterious 'eyes' are on the wall and they let you see...things. It may take you a little while to see the banshee that is after you, but you will never for one second forget it is there. The more bags you collect, the quicker your breathing becomes. You're almost, almost out. But are you? The style is decidedly retro and the darkened corridors and strange portraits on the wall add to an amazing atmosphere of terror., Headphones definitely recommended. You'll start jumping at even the slightest decibel of noise. Check out the gameplay footage.
And the number one iOS horror game is...
1. Five Nights At Freddy's - $2.99 - as if there were any other choice? The best horror games, of which Freddy's is most certainly one of them, give you just enough to survive, but little else. Nothing can ruin the suspense of a horror game than giving you a gun or weapon. It gives you a false sense of power and it's better when you're terrified. Five Nights At Freddy's locks you in the security room at a Chuck-E-Cheese's-esque kids emporium and asks you to 'keep an eye' on the animatronic animals, which are left on overnight lest their motors jam up. Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie the Bunny, Chica the Chicken, Foxy the Pirate Fox. You know them well, you hate them, and you're terrified of them. Freddy's is a game that will make you paranoid as hell. Rarely do you see them move, but like the toys in Toy Story, it's all about what happens when you're not looking.
All five titles will cost you about $15 on the App Store. From all of us here at GameNGuide, Happy Halloween. None of the titles require a network connection to play, so be sure to bring the horror with you wherever you go
