Game publisher, Majesco Entertainment Company, announced today that it plans to reboot the Double Dragon video game series with the upcoming title "Double Dragon: Neon."
Double Dragon was a highly popular two-player cooperative beat'em up game in 1987. The game spawned several spinoffs and became a prime example of the genre. WayForward will be the chosen development company that is tasked with creating a Double Dragon game for this generation.
"Double Dragon: Neon is far from a standard retro remake," said Sean Velasco, Director, WayForward. "It's WayForward's love letter to the decade that spawned the franchise -- the music, the style, and culture of the 80's pulse through the nucleus of Double Dragon: Neon. But don't think this is a simple graphical facelift; with our innovative 'mix tape' level up system and power-up high-fives, we pushed it to the limit!"
The game takes place in a hyper-saturated omniverse where players battle against the Black Dragon Clan. Players can choose to play in single mode or team up with a friend with cooperative or online mode.
Aesthetics of the game attempts to capture some of the retro look while combining it with modern and futuristic tech.
The two main characters, Billy and Jimmy Lee, are prime examples as they sport 1980's hairstyles mixed with stylish cutoff jackets and contemporary combat glove wraps. The game also contain 1980's references ranging from neon lights to cheesy music soundtracks.
"Neon isn't a shoddy sequel -- it's a face-melting 80's tour de force! Featuring bodacious characters, gnarly combat, and a retro aesthetic, it's pure over-the-top baditude... to the max[,]" stated Majesco Entertainment in a press release.
WayForward is renowned for developing games such as A Boy and his Blob, Contra 4, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, and BloodRayne: Betrayal.
Double Dragon: Neon is expected to be released this summer and will be available for Xbox LIVE Arcade, Xbox 360, and PlayStation Network.
