Two Free Apple Software Updates: OS X Released Today, iOS 8 Releases Monday, Adds 'Continuity' Between Devices

OS X Yosemite And iOS 8.1 Roll Out As Free Updates

Apple announced at its event today that its newest computer operating system, OS X Yosemite, will be rolling out over the Mac App Store today as a free update. The next mobile update, iOS 8.1, will be available for free starting Monday.

Apple Health Temporarily Disables Blood Glucose Input

The most prominent change with these updates is the addition of Continuity, an increased level of connection among all of Apple's devices. With Continuity, users with multiple Apple devices can seamlessly switch devices while continuing to work on whatever they had been working on. If an Apple user is composing an email on his OS X Yosemite MacBook, he can pick up his iPhone and continue to draft the same email instantly. A user can surf Safari on her iPad then walk over to her iMac and pick up with the same pages she had open on her tablet. The devices all stay in sync using iCloud services.

iPhone owners can even use Continuity to make calls from their computers without needing to take their phones out of their pockets.

Apple Pay Launches Monday

Besides this increase in device connectivity, the updates for OS X Yosemite are mostly superficial. iTunes and Safari get some basic user interface updates. Mail updates allow users to send attachments of up to 5 GB through iCloud. OS X Yosemite also adds iCloud Drive support to Apple computers, allowing Mac users to save their files to the cloud and access them from any OS X Yosemite or iOS 8 device.

iOS 8.1's major update to mobile devices is support for Apple Pay, which will launch alongside the update on Monday. Beyond that, a couple of apps, primarily the Photos app, are getting some user interface upgrades.

Both OS X Yosemite and iOS 8.1 will be free updates. OS X Yosemite is rolling out for download today, and iOS 8.1 will launch Monday.
