Destiny is back online following a down period during which Bungie updated the game with a connectivity patch, and now the Iron Banner Crucible event is under way until October 14.

Normally in the game's competitive multiplayer, the power of all weapons and armor is equalized to put everyone on an even playing field. In Iron Banner, the level advatage is fully enabled, meaning the defensive value of your high-level armor and the damage of your legendary weapons are all fair game.
The event does not only include the new Crucible playlist, but new gear available for purchase. The usual bounty vendor Xander 99-40 is selling Iron Banner bounties, which can be turned in to a new merchant, Lord Saladin. Build enough reputation to rank up by completing these bounties in the Iron Banner Crucible playlist, and you can purchase new gear from Lord Saladin.

Low level players may want to steer clear of the playlist--you're likely in for more frustration than anything else as you're overpowered by elite gear, but it's possible that skill can make up for it. If nothing else, you still get points for participating if you can handle not putting up very good scores, so the choice is yours.
Reaching reputation Rank 1 will allow you to purchase the Iron Banner shaders and emblems, which will give you a 10 percent boost to earning reputation if equipped. Rank 2 unlocks the Iron Banner class items, which offer another 10 percent reputation boost (the experience buffs do stack). Rank 3 will finally allow you to purchase the Iron Banner armor, as well as additional shaders and emblems. A legendary machine gun is also available at Rank 3.
