Destiny is a gorgeous game. Rarely has it seemed so much like the designers' concept art jumped off the page and straight into the digital world. The grand set pieces, the moving vistas, and the old ruins are all a spectacle--the planets feel handcrafted with care.

The cutscenes are often equally attractive, which makes it all the more disappointing that Destiny's narrative is not strong enough to compel you to care in return. The scenery is a joy to take in, and your customized Guardian and the other characters look fantastic in cutscenes. Destiny's visual excellence (achieved through a combination of its graphics and art) makes you want to feel more involved, but there's just so little to grab hold of. The story's final battle takes place in an impressive setting, but when I looked out at the Black Garden--or any of the game's attractive regions--I couldn't help but feel a tinge of disappointment as I remembered that it's all wasted on a lifeless narrative.
All of that said, the artists at Bungie should be praised for what is in the game, because it does look great.
