After the staff of Macworld, a news outlet dedicated to covering Apple and its family of products, feverishly covered yesterday's massive iPhone 6 and Apple Watch product keynote, the magazine decided to lay off most of them.
Don't Expect The Apple Watch's Battery Life To Be Too Impressive
"Whelp that was fun. Being laid off from Macworld," tweeted senior editor Roman Loyola. "Pretty much the whole Macworld staff has been let go. Looks like the end. Sad."
The crumpling of a news organization that has been dedicated to covering Cupertino for decades comes as a shock the day after the unofficial Christmas of Silicon Valley.
"Unfortunately, many of my colleagues lost their jobs today," wrote Jason Snell, Macworld writer for 17 years, in a personal blog post. "If there's anything I can do to help them, I will. I have had time to plan for this day, but they haven't. You probably know some of them. Please join with me in giving them sympathy and support."
Macworld's executive editor Dan Fisher claims that Macworld isn't dying, just killing its print version: "Macworld print is going away, but Macworld.com will continue," he tweeted.
Macworld has been riding on its legacy for many years--the news organization has long been trumped by smaller, scrappier and quicker blogs in publishing rumor and hearsay. Even still, the loss will be felt amongst the tech press and we wish the best to those who lost their jobs.
