Xbox One SmartGlass Update Simplifies Recording Game Clips, Makes Watching Highlights Easier

SmartGlass App Update Pushes Gaming As Spectator Sport

With Microsoft's new SmartGlass app update, recording and sharing your gaming triumphs is easier than ever before. The latest update for the iOS, Windows Phone and Android app allows users a simpler path to post video to Twitch (now owned by Amazon) or Google's YouTube.

The SmartGlass Xbox One companion app lets you control your console directly from your smartphone or tablet, with the ability to record gameplay from your iPhone or other device being the biggest addition to the popular Microsoft app.

The app update also pushes a social element for Xbox One, letting users post status updates on their activity feed. The app now includes a way to play a game with friends anywhere in the world, even if users don't all own the game. Microsoft is also releasing a USB media player for their Xbox One systems.

The game recording feature is causing the most excitement, though. In recent years, videogames have become a spectator sport, with clips flooding YouTube. Twitch, an outlet dedicated to watching others play videogames, was recently bought by Amazon for almost $1 billion after the retail giant wrested the start-up from Google's negotiating table.

Microsoft clearly wants to jump on-board in this new digital cottage industry, and the update to SmartGlass is a definite push in that direction.
