Sony Japan announced during its fall conference that PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 will be getting dashboard themes, similar to those coming to Vita.

The themes will be animated (an example can be seen in the video below, featuring Sony Japan characters Toro and Kuro), and the backgrounds will change as you scroll through menus. A similar feature is coming to Vita, as well, which will allow customized wallpaper, icons, and sounds.
Though the below video uses Sony Japan characters that western audiences may be unfamiliar with, it's not hard to imagine these themes with well-known properties. It's unclear when exactly the feature will be rolling out, but Sony stated that it would be part of the next firmware update.

Users may be limited to themes on the PlayStation Store as far as customization goes, but it's possible that you will be able to use a static image of your own as the background.
