The Creative Assembly has announced that two of its older Total War titles that had been using Gamespy servers to host multiplayer matches are now offering multiplayer matchmaking on Steam.

Both Rome: Total War and Medieval 2: Total War, already available on Steam, now offer multiplayer through Valve's service. The two had been using Gamespy since launch until it shut down in May, but unlike other titles that went offline permanently alongside the service, the online components of these two strategy titles have been given new life on Steam.
The developers announced the news on the Total War forums, and gave instructions on how to get the multiplayer up and running on Steam.
Dota 2 The International 4 Tournament Recap
"Players who purchased the game elsewhere can use their existing Gamespy key to redeem the new Steam version. If you own the physical CD version of the game, the key should be included in the package, most likely printed on the back of the manual.
"If you purchased a digital version from a distributer other than Steam, your key should have been sent to you on purchase of the game. If you cannot locate the key, please contact the distributer you purchased the game from."
Some players might have difficulty locating their keys, which is unfortunate, but this is a good gesture from the developers. Rome and Medieval 2 are far from the most recent games in the series (Empire, Shogun 2 and Rome 2 have all been released since, along with various expansions and DLC), but there are still segments of the community that engage in battles online. You can do so now on Steam by following the instructions above and at the link--a good alternative to the online multiplayer being disconnected permanently.
