YouTube user and modder MrBean35000vr posted the video below to his channel, stating that even though the hacks he's showing off are minor, they serve as proof of concept for further modification of the game. He also ensures fans that he is not aiming to use these hacks to enable cheating, and won't make the work public.

"Very very basic stuff, more of a proof of concept rather than anything else," he wrote in the video's description. "None of this is in any state to be released at present, and it's unlikely that we ever will in the interest of preventing cheaters."

New Wii U Zelda Not Exactly Open World, Says Miyamoto

The first change in the video--making the final lap music play on the first lap -- is simple, but shows that the modder and his associate (heard in the video) can in fact make changes to Nintendo's software. Other alterations present in the video include renaming Toad's Turnpike to Deathpike, making the final lap play no music at all, altering the Wii U menu fonts, and more.

"This work is based on the recently released browser exploit by Marionumber1, TheKit and Hykem, along with some additional code that Chadderz wrote to get arbitrary kernel reading and writing, to allow the browser to edit Mario Kart 8's memory on-the-fly," MrBean35000vr explains.

"All of this may not look impressive, but it's merely because we don't even know where to start; we can do anything now, anything at all! Custom tracks, custom songs, you name it. We just have to decipher the RAM and work out how."
